NYCHA Real Talk Request for Proposals: Translation Review and Resident Workshops in Spanish and Chinese

TakeRoot Justice’s Equitable Neighborhoods practice area is excited to present our newest initiative: the #NYCHARealTalk series. #NYCHARealTalk assists New Yorkers to impact decisions about public land and buildings in their neighborhoods by educating residents to renegotiate how NYCHA manages its portfolio of buildings and conversion programs. In Fall 2021, #NYCHARealTalk will debut a newly developed set of workshops that will be the foundation of a train-the-trainers program that will launch in late 2021.

The workshop series is a training program to support community members in informing their neighbors on how to develop hyper-localized strategies related to public housing, land use and healthy homes for and with NYCHA communities. Workshops address housing conditions (mold, lead, pests) and NYCHA’s privatization schemes (RAD/PACT section 8 conversions, infill).

We are looking for partners who will be able to review translated workshop materials (in Spanish or Chinese), and recruit community members to participate in test workshops in the translated language.

Background

TakeRoot provides legal, participatory research, and policy support to strengthen the work of grassroots and community-based groups in New York City to dismantle racial, economic, and social oppression.

TakeRoot’s Equitable Neighborhoods practice, which will be the main point of contact with the selected service provider for the purposes of this RFP, works with grassroots groups, neighborhood organizations and community coalitions to make sure that people of color, immigrants, and low-income residents are not ignored or pushed out in the name of “progress.”

Scope of Work

TakeRoot is seeking two community partners to review translated materials and do workshops in the languages of the translations with residents that they will recruit. TakeRoot will provide translated materials. Scope:

  • Proofread and reality test translated written toolkit and workshop materials, which include slide decks, handouts and facilitator guides, in either Spanish or Chinese.
  • Workshop materials in Spanish or Chinese (in person or via video conference) by facilitating a session (or several) with at least 10 NYCHA residents participating that includes all three modules (total time is 2.5-3 hours).

The timeline for the project is as follows:

  • July 7, 2021: Expression of interest documents due.
  • July 15, 2021: TakeRoot to notify selected partners
  • By August 15, 2021: Organization staff review written translations and provide written comments that will be integrated into final drafts of materials
  • By August 31, 2021: TakeRoot to provide updated final drafts of materials
  • September-October 2021: Workshops!

Fee

Each of two community partners will receive $5,000 for the above services.
