TakeRoot Justice condemns the decision by the United States Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and Casey, a decision that violates the rights of pregnant people and deprives them of their agency, bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom. We stand with our NYC community and those across the country and the world in decrying this ruling.
As organizers, as lawyers, as members of marginalized communities, we see the damage done by the Supreme Court. We know, as New Yorkers, that this ripple effect hits everyone, that we still have work to do in our city, our state, and our country.
We know that a lack of abortion access leads to dangerous health outcomes for women and other people of marginalized genders. We know too that low-income people and people of color have always been and continue to be disproportionately affected by a lack of access to safe legal abortions. We know that having the right and resources to make decisions about whether and when to have children are directly related to people’s ability to participate in society equally and fully. This ruling, along with numerous recent legislative restrictions on bodily autonomy — including abortion bans, anti-trans policies, and constraints on gender-affirming health care — is a violent embodiment of systemic sexism, racism, classism, and transphobia.
Along with countless partners, legal service colleagues, and community members, we vow to continue the fight against these oppressive, unjust laws. We will keep organizing and keep working towards a legal system that upholds human rights. We stand in solidarity with our allies across the country as we mobilize and fight like hell to see our reproductive freedoms restored.
