Maya Sikand (she/her) is an Immigrants’ Rights Staff Attorney from Nairobi, committed to the abolition of borders, prisons, and capitalist empire. Prior to joining TakeRoot Justice, Maya was at EarthRights International, where she worked with indigenous communities seeking corporate accountability for human and environmental rights abuses. Before that, she was an Immigrant Justice Corps Fellow at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, and a student at NYU Law School’s Immigrant Rights Clinic. Before law school Maya worked at the Human Rights Law Network in India, where she focused on reproductive rights and transnational litigation against pesticide companies. She then returned to her home country, Kenya, to work with indigenous communities opposing the extractive industry.
